For this week’s “Meet the Designer” segment we got chance to chat to another of our artists Shana Danon at Emilio Frank Design!

This Bondi local’s work as an artist and surface designer celebrates bold emotive colour with vibrant modernist style.

Artworks, patterns and illustrations are created with the intention to evoke joyful memories and are inspired by her passion for Mid Century design.

“Which is your personal favourite in your artwork range?”

I have a special place in my heart for ‘Modernist Blue’. It was one of the first artworks I completed whilst still at design school and indicative of my passion for Mid Century modernism. Indigo is my favourite colour to create with and I enjoy the simplicity against the white which works well with any interior. ‘Modernist Blue’ hangs in my living room amongst an eclectic mix of paintings, drawings, photographs and wall hangings.

“Where do you discover inspiration for new work?”

Mid Century design is a constant inspiration. The architecture, quality of workmanship and materials, experimental palettes & patterns seen in interiors + fashion, as well as the pop culture of that era.

I’m a Bondi local, so the ocean and urban landscape also influence my work.

“What is your favourite thing about Australia?”

There are so many things to list but I can’t go past our icons – The Sydney Opera House + Sydney Harbour Bridge. Circular Quay takes my breath away every single time! I am rarely without a camera in hand and must have taken thousands of photos of the city. I love the freedom, multiculturalism, creative opportunities and stunning landscape of our country.

“What is the most exciting interior trend for you at the moment?”

I’m thrilled that the Mid Century vibe is back in a big way – in furniture, lighting and textile trends –  which all work well with my artworks!

“When you get a day off what do you love to do?”

Brunch with the family, walking around Centennial Park, visiting an art gallery, browsing through antique stores and coffee with the girls. Throw in a gig and I’m one happy woman!

“How would you describe your own interior style?”

Modern vintage.  Over the years I’ve collected a selection of vintage 60s/ 70s furniture and decor mixed with contemporary modernist pieces. Bright pops of colour in soft furnishings and artworks, and as many indoor and outdoor plants that I can keep alive ?

A previous career as a professional organiser / de-clutterer developed my interest in interiors and made me conscious of mindful purchasing. I love purposeful and functional spaces with personality!

“Where is your favourite place in the world?”

My soul belongs to London. A long time anglophile, I lived there in my 20s. Italy comes a close second. Having said that, I am proud to call Sydney home.

“What is your biggest daily challenge running your own business?”

Time! There is so much I want to do each day, but I am learning to be patient and enjoy the process!
