We all dream of the perfect Insta-worthy pad, immaculately styled and perfectly in tune with our tastes. Unfortunately, this is much more difficult to achieve in real life!

Whether you’ve just bought your own property or are moving into a new rental, the process of actually styling and decorating your home can feel daunting.

Will you choose the right items? How can you nail that magazine look that you’ve been lusting after? How do you even know what your own home decor style is? If you don’t know your mid-century modern from your Bohemian, we’ve got the guide for you!

To help you finesse your home decorating skills, we rounded up some of Australia’s top interior designers to teach us their best style tips for beginners

Curate a mood board

Tiffany Benn, founder of HART Home Decor and Girl with a Hart Interior Styling, suggests seeking out inspiration first and foremost.

“As a self taught interior stylist one of the main ways I have discovered my own personal style (before the days of Pinterest) was trawling through interiors magazines. Often, I would cut out all the looks, colours, products and styles I liked the look of, then make up mood boards to see what coordinated.

Then as Pinterest became more popular, I started using this as my go to resource for all things interiors and style. If you just start browsing and pinning, it will begin to learn what you like and will suggest more for you!”

Flick through some magazines or simply browse Pinterest to start putting together the vision of your dream home. For more design inspiration, make sure to visit her websiteFacebook and Instagram.

Start choosing pieces

Once you’ve got an idea of your stylistic preferences, you can start fitting out your space. Courtney Younie, director of Allure Property Styling, gave us a whole plethora of steps to take:

“Living in a space that reflects your personality is what makes it feel like home. If you’re redecorating, start with your walls, floors and classic pieces of furniture – sticking with neutral colours that are simple, stylish and won’t date”

Whether you’re renting, or own your home, you can incorporate artwork, cushions, throws, rugs and decorative items such as sculptures, candles and photo frames, which add a pop of colour and provide interesting layers and textures.

If your budget is tight, look at Kmart, Target and local homeware stores, as they have some great pieces. Be confident to mix it up, so it doesn’t all look the same.”

Base a theme around these items

Do you now have some statement pieces you’re absolutely in love with? Wesley Spencer from Rara Architecture recommends spring-boarding off these pieces to bring together a cohesive look:

Start by grabbing your favourite items. Identify the size and prominent colours. Balance it against complementary contrasting colours.

If you struggle, Google ‘colour wheel’ and pick colours on the opposite end of the wheel.

Try to make larger objects in the room a less prominent colour, like muted versions of the colours of your feature pieces you have in your room. But also, don’t stick to grey for everything.

For example, you have a forest green lamp shade with a brass base, consider deepening the range with a light mint green sofa, some royal blue cushions and a brass picture frame with some reddish orange tones.

Finally, natural finishes give a space a more lasting appeal. Stone, timber, metals, plants all have a place in any room.”
